I’ve been busy painting for my solo show coming up at the Elaine Fleck Gallery. I will have several new works on display for the month of September!

July 2011

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Amy Shackleton Paints Futuristic Eco-Cities

The Elaine Fleck Gallery is proud to announce Amy Shackleton’s solo show from September 1st to 25th with the opening celebration on September 15th. Amy Shackleton is an emerging artist who graduated from York University in 2008 with a Bachelor’s in Fine Art. She was picked up by The Elaine Fleck Gallery following her graduation resulting in dozens of paintings being collected by Canadian and International art buyers.

Shackleton’s paintings combine the architecture and rural landscapes of various locales from around the world (United States, England, Croatia, Peru, Morocco) as well as her native Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Banff). She creates colorful worlds where urban and pastoral collide. She is futuristically looking at sustainable cities where it would not be unheard of to have a building flanked by a waterfall. She describes her process as, “Using acrylic washes, erratic paint drips, shiny enamel and hard-edge details, I juxtapose representation/abstraction, urban/rural, gloss/matte and design/spontaneity to accentuate the plurality of landscapes in the city. My eco-cities suggest vibrant possibilities for urban renewal and inspire other sectors to regenerate, design, and accelerate environmental cities.”

Not only does she seek to revolutionize urban planning by creating imaginary composites of the manmade and natural worlds she is revolutionizing painting as a genre like a post-modern Pollock taking the drip technique to new levels of transcendence. She drips for abstract purposes but also for figurative purposes. The drips create the straight lines and the backgrounds where she intends to make the paintbrush an object of antiquity. She drips and masks and drips and layers so her paintings are more composites of layers of paint upon paint in both meaning and medium.

Her new solo show will take her drip technique and urban fusions to a Torontonian height with each painting containing parts of Toronto in need of an ecological facelift juxtaposed with the natural world from her international adventures. Shackleton has traveled extensively in the last year to gain insight and inspiration in her work and see the colors, architecture and natural beauty of other countries.

Shackleton’s optimistic and futuristic paintings build worlds where nature and metropolis live unified in one vibrant sustainable whole; where the future is bright and full of many dynamic possibilities. If ever there were a rising star in the painting world in Canada, it would be Amy Shackleton.

About the Artist:

At only 25, Toronto based artist Amy Shackleton has exhibited paintings in New York, London, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary. Shackleton’s work was recently selected for purchase by the Colart Collection in Montreal. She was a finalist in the 2010 Signature Art Awards at Degree Art Gallery in London and nominated for the 2010 and 2011 Palm Art Awards in Germany. Shackleton received her BFA Honours Degree from York University in 2008. She paints full time from her new studio space in Toronto. Shackleton is represented by the Elaine Fleck Gallery.

About the Gallery:

The Elaine Fleck Gallery is located in the heart of the trendy West Queen West, Art and Design District, known in Toronto for its plethora of fine art galleries. Art patrons and major collectors come weekly to this area to collect new and exciting artists that are expanding the arts scene locally and nationally. The Elaine Fleck Gallery is proud to represent the best of Canada’s emerging artists.

Artist Spotlight: AMY SHACKLETON

Amy Shackleton is a visual artist based in Toronto, Canada making one hell of a name for herself!

Her paintings are captivating landscapes colliding together ever so gently. We chatted with Amy a week prior to her next solo show in Toronto.

Name:

Amy Shackleton

Currently represented at which galleries?:

The Elaine Fleck Gallery (Toronto), Gerry Thomas Gallery (Calgary), Degree Art Gallery (London, England).

Favorite thing about your job?:

I’m able to paint, travel and be creative everyday. What more can an artist ask for?

Least favorite thing about your job?:

Ironically, writing about my work. I have a hard time organizing my thoughts in a linear fashion. Besides, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?

Advice to anybody thinking about stepping into the visual arts world?:

You need to love it, want it and live for it everyday. Don’t be afraid of rejection, because it will happen time and time again. Make time for your art, and I’m not talking about just an hour or two per day. I tried painting “on the side” of a full time office job. Despite my intentions, I rarely found the time and energy to paint, let alone research galleries, attend openings, apply for exhibitions and establish myself as an artist. So I quit my job. One month later, I had nine commissions and a group exhibition lined up in Toronto. It’s now been two and a half years, and I’ve sold over 80 paintings to private and corporate collectors across Canada.

What do you have next up your sleeve?

Next week I have a solo show, called revitalizaT.On, opening at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto. It runs September 1-25. Each painting dissects an area of Toronto I feel needs a natural uplift. It’s my first series of work created entirely without a paintbrush. Instead, I apply the paint with squeeze bottles and rotate the canvas to manipulate each drip. The result is calculated, yet spontaneous! Also, I’m flying to Rome next week to gather inspiration for my upcoming appearance at the International Art Fair in Toronto (Oct 28-31). I’ll be back in Toronto in time for the opening reception of revitalizaT.On September 15th 6-9pm.

Where do you currently reside?/Best way to check out your work and get in touch with you?:

Im the proud new owner of a live/work studio near Queen Street and Carlaw Avenue in Toronto. But, right now, most of my works are on display at The Elaine Fleck Gallery and Gerry Thomas Gallery. You can view all of my works, and see their availability on my website (www.amyshackleton.com).
